Dog Poisoning Survivor's Fight to Ban Hazardous Bait

A Sydney woman is campaigning to ban the use of a common poison, 1080, after it nearly killed her adopted greyhound, Elsa. Yvette Colomb's beloved dog ingested the toxic bait in 2020, leading to severe illness and permanent disability. Elsa, a former racing dog, was rescued by Colomb and given a new lease on life before the poisoning incident.

The incident occurred when Elsa began vomiting and suffering seizures. Emergency veterinary care, including life support, was required. The vet confirmed Elsa had ingested sodium fluoroacetate, known as 1080, a poison used to control populations of foxes, rabbits, wild dogs, and feral cats. The poison is delivered through laced food items.

Despite the grim prognosis, Elsa miraculously survived after nearly two weeks of intensive care. However, the poisoning left her permanently disabled, requiring extensive rehabilitation, including hydrotherapy and a specialized diet. The veterinary bills totaled approximately $20,000, a significant financial burden for Colomb. Elsa's health declined further, and she passed away in June.

Colomb, devastated by the loss, has launched a petition to ban 1080 baits. She believes the current methods of pest control are inhumane and wants to prevent other animals from suffering the same fate as Elsa. While acknowledging the need to manage pest populations, Colomb advocates for more responsible and humane alternatives. Her petition on Change.org has already garnered thousands of signatures, and she plans to petition the Federal Parliament to reconsider the use of 1080 nationwide.
