Yankees Bolster Bullpen with Veteran Reliever

The New York Yankees have signed right-handed pitcher Peter Strzelecki to a minor league contract, assigning him to their Triple-A affiliate, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The 31-year-old reliever joins the Yankees after a brief stint with the Milwaukee Brewers earlier this season.

Strzelecki began the 2026 season with the Brewers' Triple-A affiliate, Nashville, after signing a minor league deal in February. He pitched in 16 games for Nashville, posting a 4.12 ERA. Milwaukee later added him to their major league roster in May but designated him for assignment shortly after. After clearing waivers, Strzelecki elected free agency.

Before joining the Yankees, Strzelecki last pitched in the majors in 2024 with the Cleveland Guardians. During that season, he recorded a 2.31 ERA in 11 appearances.

Throughout his major league career, Strzelecki has played for the Brewers, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Guardians. Across 77 games, he holds a 3.44 ERA, a 1.22 WHIP, and 86 strikeouts in 83.2 innings. He has also maintained a 24 percent strikeout rate and an 8.4 percent walk rate, with one save.

The addition of Strzelecki provides the Yankees with experienced relief pitching depth. However, his lack of minor league options presents a roster management challenge. If the Yankees were to call him up to the major league roster later this season, they would need to designate him for assignment before sending him back to the minors.

BNN's Perspective:

This signing appears to be a low-risk, high-reward move for the Yankees. Adding a veteran reliever with a proven track record at the major league level provides valuable depth for the bullpen. While the lack of minor league options adds a layer of complexity, the potential upside of Strzelecki's performance could be a significant boost to the team's pitching staff.
