World Hemophilia Day 2023: Know the top 7 symptoms of this blood disorder
New Delhi: World Hemophilia Day is observed on April 17 every year with an aim to spread awareness about this blood disorder, its causes, symptoms and treatment options. Hemophilia is a bleeding disorder wherein the blood loses its ability to clot properly. Mostly an inherited condition, it results in spontaneous bleeding after injuries or surgery. It is usually blamed on deficiencies of proteins that support clotting of blood in order to stop uncontrolled bleeding. Why is hemophilia a cause of concern? When the blood loses its ability to clot naturally, it results in excess bleeding after any form of damage or injury. It can also result in excess loss of blood which can be potentially deadly for patients and may result in anaemia in the long run if left untreated. While doctors say that small cuts are not much of a problem, a severe form of hemophilia can be problematic as it can result in internal bleeding, especially in the elbows, knees and ankles. This can damage the tissues, organs and might even be life-threatening. What are the symptoms of hemophilia? Doctors say that the symptoms of hemophilia depend on the level of clotting factors. If the factor is mildly low, bleeding will occur only after trauma or surgery. And if it is severe, bleeding can happen for smallest of reasons. The symptoms of this blood disorder are: Unusual bleeding after vaccinations Blood in the urine or stools Unexplained irritability in infants Too many large or deep bruises Pain or swelling or tightness in the joints Unexplained, excessive bleeding from injuries or cuts after dental work or surgery Unexplained nosebleeds Sometimes, in extreme cases, there can be bleeding in the brain. A single bump in the brain can also result in bleeding in hemophilia patients thereby causing severe complications. The symptoms in such cases are: Sleepiness Lethargy Double vision Repeated vomiting Prolonged headaches Convulsions Seizures Sudden weakness Clumsiness Is hemophilia always inherited? Hemophilia may not always be inherited. In such cases, it can occur due to the following conditions: Cancer Autoimmune disorder Pregnancy Drug reactions Multiple sclerosis Disclaimer: Tips and suggestions mentioned in the article are for general information purposes only and should not be construed as professional medical advice.
