World-Famous VPN Provider Faces Class-Action Lawsuit Over Subscription Practices

A class-action lawsuit has been filed against NordVPN, a prominent provider of virtual private network (VPN) services, alleging deceptive practices related to its automatic subscription renewals. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, claims that NordVPN's auto-renewal policies are "illegal" and "deceptive," violating state consumer laws.

The plaintiff, Lanzy Kandeh, claims he was unaware his subscription would automatically renew and was subsequently charged for an additional year of service he did not want. The lawsuit names Nordvpn S.A, Tefincom SA, and Nordsec B.V. as defendants. The suit alleges that NordVPN fails to adequately inform customers about auto-renewal, a practice described as a "negative option." The lawsuit details six specific ways NordVPN is said to mislead users, including unclear subscription processes, lack of auto-renewal information in receipts, premature renewal charges, difficult cancellation procedures, insufficient renewal notices, and undisclosed changes to renewal terms.

Kandeh, seeking to represent affected New Yorkers, is seeking $50 million in damages. He also claims he was misled regarding the auto-renewal of an Incogni data removal service, also owned by Nord Security. This is not the first time NordVPN has faced such accusations; a similar case was filed in 2024 in a Colorado federal court.

NordVPN responded to inquiries, stating it "continuously strives to provide an excellent customer experience and complies with legal requirements." They added that they are "very clear about the recurring nature of our services."

BNN's Perspective: While auto-renewal practices are common across various subscription services, the allegations against NordVPN highlight the importance of transparency and clear communication with consumers. If proven, these practices could erode consumer trust in the VPN industry.
