Woman and Dog Share Unlikely Cancer Journey
A woman from England experienced a remarkable and emotional turn of events when her dog, acquired for support during her own cancer battle, was later diagnosed with the same disease. Vickie Doogan, 52, initially faced a breast cancer diagnosis at age 39, which led to chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation. After a period of remission, she was diagnosed again at 44 and underwent further treatment, ultimately opting for a double mastectomy due to a BRCA2 gene mutation, which increases the risk of breast cancer.
In 2018, while recovering from her second cancer battle, Doogan adopted a dog named Dolly, a constant companion providing comfort and support. In February 2026, Doogan took Dolly to the vet for what she believed was a minor ailment. However, a lump was discovered under one of the dog's nipples, leading to a diagnosis of breast cancer.
Dolly underwent a mastectomy to remove the cancerous growth. Fortunately, the cancer was determined to be low-grade, and no further treatment was required. Dolly recovered relatively quickly. Both Doogan and Dolly are now cancer-free. Doogan hopes their shared experience offers encouragement to others facing a cancer diagnosis, emphasizing that recovery and a full life are possible.
