Wildfire Rages on Crete, Forcing Mass Evacuations

ATHENS - A significant wildfire continues to burn on the Greek island of Crete, prompting the evacuation of over 1,500 residents and tourists. The blaze, fueled by strong winds, has ravaged forests and farmland in the Ierapetra region along the island's southern coast since Wednesday night.

Firefighters are battling the flames with a substantial force, including 230 personnel and 10 aircraft equipped to drop water. Despite these efforts, containment remains elusive. Authorities have reported damage to homes as the fire continues to spread across the landscape.

Evacuees, including tourists, have been relocated to safer locations, such as an indoor basketball arena and hotels in other parts of Crete. The coast guard was prepared for additional sea evacuations, with six private boats on standby. Two individuals were already rescued by boat overnight.
