Kristen Stewart is embracing the potential for failure as she prepares to premiere her directorial debut, "The Chronology of Water," at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. In a candid interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the actress-turned-director expressed her hope that the film, an adaptation of Lidia Yuknavitch's memoir, "crashes and burns" in a "correct" way.
Stewart, 35, admitted she's still in disbelief that her film, which stars Imogen Poots and Earl Cave, was accepted into the prestigious Un Certain Regard section. She revealed the movie is not yet fully complete, requiring two more weeks of work on color and sound. "This is my f------ first draft," she confessed, highlighting the film's raw and unfinished state.
The film chronicles Yuknavitch's journey of self-discovery, exploring how trauma can be transformed into art. Stewart, who has long harbored a desire to direct, described the process as a "Hail Mary" and embraced the vulnerability of the project. "Mistakes are f------ hot," she stated, reflecting her willingness to embrace imperfections.
Stewart, who recently married filmmaker Dylan Meyer, is already looking ahead, expressing her desire to direct "10 more movies." While she's keeping those future projects under wraps for now, her excitement for filmmaking is palpable. The Cannes Film Festival, where "The Chronology of Water" will premiere on May 16th, runs through May 24th.
