Lifestyle changes, such as a nutrient-dense diet and mindful grooming, are beneficial but may not reverse significant hair loss alone. Prescription medications remain a primary defense. Topical minoxidil, which extends the hair growth phase, and oral finasteride, which blocks DHT production, are considered gold standards. Oral minoxidil is also an option for those who prefer not to apply topical solutions. Dutasteride, a more potent DHT blocker, may offer superior results in some cases. Other treatments include topical finasteride, low-level laser therapy, and platelet-rich plasma injections, though evidence for some is more limited.

The earlier hair loss is treated, the better the prognosis. If follicles are still present and producing even fine hairs, there is a greater opportunity to improve density and slow progression. In advanced stages, hair transplantation, which relocates DHT-resistant follicles, becomes a viable option. The overarching advice from experts is to consult a dermatologist promptly if you notice changes in your hair, as it is far easier to preserve existing follicles than to revive dormant ones.
