Video Game Adaptations Surge, Leaving Opportunities for Studios
The entertainment industry is experiencing a boom in video game adaptations, with a 30% annual increase since 2019. A recent study by Ampere Analysis highlights this trend, revealing that 272 video game adaptations were greenlit for film and TV between 2019 and 2025, with 2024 being a standout year with 62 new orders. The market has shifted decisively towards live-action adaptations, driven by the success of titles like "The Last of Us" and "A Minecraft Movie." In 2025, live-action adaptations accounted for 69% of commissioned projects, more than double the share from the previous year.
Major studios are heavily invested in this trend. Warner Bros., Paramount, Netflix, Comcast, and Amazon have secured rights to numerous game franchises. Warner Bros. and Paramount favor theatrical releases, while Amazon, Disney, Netflix, and Comcast lean towards streaming series.
Ampere Analysis identifies eight key factors for successful adaptations: a defined narrative, adaptation style, addressable audience, franchise release year, franchise popularity, title popularity, title recency, and ESRB age rating. The study suggests that less restrictive age ratings, such as E (Everyone) or E10+, are preferable for broader audience reach.
Based on these criteria, Ampere has identified four high-potential, unclaimed game IPs: "Baldur's Gate 3," "Black Myth: Wukong," "Hollow Knight: Silksong," and "Sons of the Forest." "Baldur's Gate 3," a role-playing game released in 2023, is particularly noteworthy, having won Game of the Year at all five major gaming awards ceremonies.
BNN's Perspective: The surge in video game adaptations presents exciting opportunities for both studios and audiences. While the trend towards live-action adaptations is clear, the success of these projects will depend on careful consideration of the key factors identified by Ampere Analysis. The potential for "Baldur's Gate 3" and other unclaimed titles to become the next big hit is certainly there, but studios must prioritize quality and audience appeal to capitalize on this growing market.
