The fundamental question of why sex exists, despite its apparent costs, has long puzzled scientists. While early biologists like Charles Darwin lacked the understanding of genetics to fully grasp the mechanisms, later discoveries only deepened the mystery. Evolutionary biologist John Maynard Smith highlighted the "twofold cost of sex," noting that a parthenogenetic female, reproducing asexually, could double her reproductive rate by producing only daughters. This mathematical disadvantage suggests sex must offer significant evolutionary benefits.

Other species exhibit extreme forms of sexual interaction, such as traumatic insemination in bedbugs or the parasitic attachment of male anglerfish to females.
The study of sex has also brought to light the widespread prevalence of same-sex behavior across numerous species, challenging the notion that sex is solely for procreation. Animals engage in same-sex interactions for social cohesion, to gain favors, and even for pleasure. This broad spectrum of sexual practices, from the seemingly conventional to the highly unconventional, underscores the immense diversity of life's reproductive strategies.
