Boulder Flamethrower Attack: What We Know So Far

A horrific attack on Boulder's Pearl Street Mall on Sunday afternoon has left eight people injured, with the suspect, Mohamed Sabry Soliman, facing serious charges. According to jail records, Soliman, an Egyptian citizen residing in the U.S. illegally on an expired tourist visa, has been booked on suspicion of eight felonies, including first-degree murder and assault. He is being held on a $10 million bond.

The attack, which federal officials are investigating as a targeted act of violence and terrorism, occurred at 1:26 p.m. near the Boulder County Historic Courthouse. Soliman allegedly threw an incendiary device and used a makeshift flamethrower, setting people on fire. Witnesses reported Soliman yelling "Free Palestine" during the incident. The victims, identified as four men and four women aged 52 to 88, were participating in a Run for Their Lives demonstration, a national movement advocating for the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas.

The FBI is involved in the investigation, with agents conducting court-authorized law enforcement activity in El Paso County, where Soliman resided. Several victims were treated at local hospitals, including Boulder Community Health and UCHealth University of Colorado Hospitals burn unit. While all victims treated at Boulder Community Health have been transferred or discharged, the conditions of those still hospitalized are currently unknown. The attack occurred just before the Jewish holiday of Shavuot, prompting a statement from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who condemned the attack and expressed solidarity with the victims.

BNN's Perspective: This attack is a deeply disturbing act of violence, and the investigation must be thorough. While the suspect's alleged motivations are concerning, it's crucial to avoid generalizations and allow the legal process to unfold. The focus should remain on supporting the victims and ensuring the safety of the community.
