National Weather Service Issues Cold Weather Alerts to Protect Public
The National Weather Service (NWS) employs a system of Cold Weather Alerts to inform the public about the potential dangers associated with cold temperatures. These alerts are tailored to specific regions, recognizing that what constitutes dangerous cold varies depending on the climate and the population's acclimatization. The NWS uses a three-tiered system to communicate the level of risk: Advisory, Watch, and Warning.
A Cold Weather Advisory indicates that temperatures are significantly colder than average and can pose a risk to individuals not adequately prepared with warm clothing. The temperature thresholds for issuing an advisory vary widely. For example, states like Minnesota and the Dakotas may not issue an advisory until temperatures plummet to 15 to 30 degrees below zero. In contrast, Florida may issue an advisory when temperatures reach just 30 degrees.
An Extreme Cold Watch is issued when dangerous cold conditions or wind chills are possible, but the exact timing and location are uncertain. During an Extreme Cold Watch, the NWS advises people to limit outdoor activities, particularly during the coldest parts of the day, such as overnight and just after sunrise.
An Extreme Cold Warning is issued when dangerous cold conditions are actively occurring. During these warnings, the NWS strongly recommends avoiding outdoor activities if possible. If travel is unavoidable, the NWS advises informing someone of your destination and route. The NWS also recommends wearing multiple layers of clothing, including an insulating layer like a heavy winter jacket, during an Extreme Cold Warning.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) identifies hypothermia and frostbite as primary health risks associated with cold weather exposure.
