San Diego Wave Settle for Draw After Late Penalty Against Portland Thorns
San Diego Wave FC suffered a heartbreaking 1-1 draw against the Portland Thorns on Saturday, conceding a penalty kick in the 97th minute. Rookie center back Jayden Perry of the Thorns calmly slotted the ball past Wave goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan, who was celebrating her 150th NWSL game.
The Wave had led for most of the match, thanks to a first-half goal from 17-year-old midfielder Kimmi Ascanio, who scored her second professional goal with a diving header. The game took a turn in the 40th minute when Wave defender Kennedy Wesley received a red card, forcing San Diego to play with ten players for over 50 minutes. Despite the disadvantage, the Wave held their lead until the late penalty call.
The draw marks the second consecutive game where the Wave's fate was decided in stoppage time. Despite the disappointing result, the Wave remains in a strong position in the NWSL standings, currently fifth with a 4-2-2 record. The Thorns are close behind in sixth place.
Adding to the drama, Wave head coach Jonas Eidevall was absent from the sidelines due to illness, with assistant coach Jack Jensen taking his place. Forward Kyra Carusa also made her return after recovering from an injury.
BNN's Perspective: While it's frustrating to see a win slip away so late, the Wave's resilience, especially playing a man down for so long, is commendable. They're exceeding expectations this season, and this draw, while disappointing, shows they can compete with the best in the league. The emergence of young talents like Ascanio and Armstrong is also a positive sign for the future.
