National Christmas Tree Lighting Kicks Off Holiday Season in Washington D.C.

Washington, D.C. – The annual National Christmas Tree lighting ceremony took place, marking the official start of the holiday season. The event, a tradition dating back to 1923, saw President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump participate in the lighting of the tree on the Ellipse.

This year's tree was adorned with ornaments created by students from every state, territory, and Washington, D.C., each reflecting the history, heritage, and culture of their respective homes. In addition to the main tree, 58 other trees were decorated in the President's Park. One of these trees was dedicated to America250, a bipartisan organization celebrating America's 250th anniversary. The ornaments on this tree were designed by winners of a school contest that asked students to reflect on the meaning of America. A spokesperson for America250 announced a new contest, inviting students in grades 3-12 to submit artwork for consideration on next year's tree.

President Trump delivered remarks during the ceremony, referencing the Gospel of John and emphasizing themes of love and service. The event also featured musical performances from Gabby Barrett and Matthew West, Alana Springsteen, and the U.S. Navy Band Commodores Jazz Ensemble. The public can view the ceremony on Great America Family. The National Christmas Tree will be lit daily after sunset and remain on display until the New Year.

BNN's Perspective: The National Christmas Tree lighting is a cherished tradition that brings people together. While the event has a clear religious undertone, it also celebrates the diversity and creativity of the nation. The inclusion of student artwork and the focus on America's history provide a unifying element, reminding us of shared values and the importance of community.
