Sofia Kourtesis Releases "Volver" EP: A Dance Music Celebration of Community and Resilience
Berlin-based producer and singer Sofia Kourtesis has released her new EP, "Volver," a collection of dance music that celebrates the LGBTQ+ community, particularly trans women. The EP, inspired by Pedro Almodóvar's 2006 film of the same name, builds upon the success of her 2023 debut album, "Madres," which explored themes of family and activism.
"Volver" showcases Kourtesis's ability to blend electronic music elements with poignant and uplifting themes. The EP features a range of tracks, from propulsive dance floor fillers to more introspective pieces. Collaborations include a track with Daphni (Dan Snaith of Caribou), resulting in the acid-tinged groove of "Unidos." The instrumental track "Nitzan and Aminaa" offers a deep house experience.
The EP also includes tracks that highlight Kourtesis's personal experiences and cultural heritage. "Canela Pura" offers a more intimate look at love and freedom, while "Corazón" showcases her vocal growth. "Ballumbrosio," named after Peruvian musical legend Miguel Ballumbrosio, incorporates Afro-Peruvian traditions into her kinetic fusion.
Kourtesis wrote and recorded "Volver" while touring, drawing inspiration from her live sets. The EP reflects her ability to weave together musical, political, and personal influences, creating a diverse and emotionally resonant listening experience.
BNN's Perspective: Kourtesis's "Volver" is a welcome addition to the dance music scene. The EP's focus on community and resilience, combined with its innovative sound, makes it a compelling listen. The incorporation of diverse musical influences, particularly her Peruvian heritage, adds depth and richness to her work. It's a testament to the power of music to both entertain and uplift.
