Man Sentenced to Prison After Shooting at Pregnant Girlfriend's Uber

A man has been sentenced to six years in prison after shooting at his pregnant girlfriend's Uber vehicle. Michael Ward, who had previously threatened his girlfriend, was charged with attempted murder and firearm offenses following the incident.

The shooting occurred on April 17th, after Ward allegedly warned his girlfriend of his intentions. According to a probable cause affidavit, Ward stated he was "going to get my gun and cash out" before the shooting. He then fired approximately three rounds from an AR-style rifle at the Uber, a Jeep Wrangler, as his girlfriend attempted to flee. The shots shattered the rear window and flattened a tire.

Ward had been sitting in a Buick LeSabre when the Uber arrived. He retrieved his weapon and opened fire, aiming at both his girlfriend and the Uber driver. Police recovered three shell casings from the scene.

Initially facing more serious charges, Ward accepted a plea deal last month that reduced the charges to criminal recklessness. This resulted in a lighter sentence than the original attempted murder charge would have carried. The maximum sentence under the plea agreement was six years, which he received. Ward will receive credit for seven days of time served.

BNN's Perspective:

While the reduced charges and sentence may seem lenient given the severity of the actions, the plea deal likely reflects a pragmatic approach to the legal process. It's a reminder of the complexities of the justice system, where factors like evidence, the defendant's cooperation, and the potential for a longer, more costly trial can influence outcomes. The focus now should be on ensuring Ward serves his time and that the victim receives the support she needs.
