Valerie Mahaffey, a beloved and versatile actress known for her memorable roles in television and film, has passed away at the age of 71 after battling cancer. Her publicist, Jillian Roscoe, announced her death on Friday night.

Mahaffey was celebrated for her ability to portray eccentric and complex characters, earning her an Emmy Award and a Spirit Award nomination. She captivated audiences with her performances across a wide range of popular shows.

One of her most iconic roles was as Eve, the hypochondriac wife on the critically acclaimed CBS series *Northern Exposure* (1991-1994). Her performance earned her a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in 1992. She also made a mark on *Desperate Housewives* (2006-2007) as the manipulative Alma Hodge and later appeared on *Young Sheldon* (2017-2020) as Victoria MacElroy. More recently, she played Lorna Harding, Christina Applegate's mother-in-law, in the Netflix series *Dead to Me* (2019-2022).

Born in Indonesia on June 16, 1953, Mahaffey began her acting career in New York City, gracing Broadway stages six times. Her stage work included roles in *Dracula* and *Play Memory*. She also appeared in the NBC soap opera *The Doctors* and won Obie Awards for her work in *Top Girls* and *Talking Heads*. Her film credits include *Jungle 2 Jungle*, *Seabiscuit*, and *Sully*.

Mahaffey's husband, Joseph Kell, released a statement expressing his grief, stating, "I have lost the love of my life, and America has lost one of its most endearing actresses." She is survived by her husband and daughter, Alice.
