US Studio Revives Classic Dinosaur Shooter 'Turok'
A US-based game studio is breathing new life into the classic video game franchise "Turok," a series that once dominated the gaming scene. The upcoming title, "Turok: Origins," promises a modern take on the original concept, blending elements of the "Jurassic Park" and "Predator" movie franchises.
The "Turok" character first appeared in comic books in the 1950s, later transitioning to the Nintendo 64 console in the late 1990s. The games gained popularity, but the franchise faded from the spotlight in the 2000s. Now, Saber Interactive, a studio with a history of reviving dormant intellectual properties (IPs), is taking on the challenge.
Saber Interactive was approached by Universal Studios, the producer of the "Jurassic Park" films, in 2020 to develop the new "Turok" game. The studio head, Jesus Iglesias, expressed surprise at the opportunity, noting the franchise's long period of inactivity. Saber Interactive has previously revitalized other titles, including "Space Marine" and "Evil Dead."
"Turok: Origins" was previewed at Gamescom, a major gaming trade show. The game will feature both single-player and multiplayer modes, allowing players to battle AI-controlled enemies. The developers aim to create a more fluid and cinematic experience compared to the original games, while still paying homage to the earlier titles. The studio is also working to create a more consistent universe for the game.
The original "Turok" games, particularly the first two, are being used as inspiration. The 2008 reboot of the series received a mixed reception, and a 2019 title was unconnected to the main series. "Turok: Origins" is slated for release on Xbox, Playstation, and PC, though a specific launch date has not yet been announced.
BNN's Perspective: The revival of "Turok" is a welcome development for fans of classic gaming. While the market is saturated with shooters, the blend of dinosaur and alien themes, combined with Saber Interactive's track record, could make "Turok: Origins" a compelling title. The success of this reboot will depend on how well the studio balances nostalgia with modern gaming expectations.
