Udio and Kobalt Announce Strategic Partnership, Signaling Shift in AI Music Landscape

The deal with Kobalt follows similar agreements with Universal Music Group (UMG) and Warner Music Group (WMG). These partnerships allow Udio to license the companies' music catalogs for training its AI models, but only with the consent of the artists and songwriters involved. A key element of the UMG deal involved Udio shifting its service from one that utilized unlicensed material to a licensed model. This allows users to create remixes, covers, and new songs using the voices and compositions of participating artists and songwriters.

The lawsuits, which accused Udio of using copyrighted music without proper licensing, highlighted the complexities surrounding AI-generated music and intellectual property rights. The partnerships with UMG and WMG effectively ended their participation in the lawsuit against Udio, though Sony Music continues its legal pursuit.
The Kobalt partnership is expected to create new revenue streams for Kobalt's artists and songwriters. The announcement comes shortly after the news that Primary Wave will be acquiring Kobalt's worldwide operations, including its catalog of owned copyrights and digital collection company amra.
