Uber and Avride Launch Robotaxi Service in Dallas
Dallas residents can now hail an autonomous ride through the Uber app, thanks to a new partnership with Avride. The ride-hailing giant and the Austin-based autonomous vehicle startup have launched a commercial robotaxi service in the city, marking a significant step in the expansion of self-driving technology.
The service, which began this week, currently features a human safety operator behind the wheel and operates within a limited 9-square-mile area, including downtown Dallas. However, the companies plan to expand both the operational area and eventually transition to fully driverless operations. The robotaxi fleet consists of all-electric Hyundai Ioniq 5 vehicles equipped with Avride's self-driving system.
This launch is part of Uber's broader strategy to integrate autonomous vehicles into its network. The company has forged partnerships with 20 AV companies, including Waymo and WeRide, across various sectors, including freight, delivery, and robotaxis. Uber already offers autonomous vehicle services in several cities, including Abu Dhabi, Riyadh, Atlanta, Austin, and Phoenix. The company aims to have AVs in at least 10 cities by the end of 2026, with plans to launch in Arlington, Dubai, London, Los Angeles, Munich, and the San Francisco Bay Area over the next two years.
The partnership with Avride, which is part of Nebius Group, includes a multi-year deal and significant investments. Avride's sidewalk delivery robots are already in use on Uber Eats in several cities. Uber will provide end-to-end rider support, while Avride will oversee vehicle testing. Uber will take over day-to-day fleet operations, including cleaning, maintenance, inspections, charging, and depot management.
UberX, Uber Comfort, and Uber Comfort Electric riders may be matched with an Avride robotaxi, though it is not guaranteed. Riders can adjust settings in the Uber app to increase their chances of getting a robotaxi. The cost of robotaxi rides will be the same as those with human drivers. Riders can choose to accept or decline a robotaxi match.
BNN's Perspective:
The launch of robotaxi services in Dallas represents a notable advancement in autonomous vehicle technology. While the initial rollout is limited, the expansion plans signal a commitment to integrating self-driving vehicles into the mainstream. The partnership model, with Uber handling operational aspects and Avride focusing on technology, could prove to be a successful strategy for scaling these services. However, the success of this venture will depend on public acceptance, safety performance, and the ability to navigate regulatory hurdles.
