U.S. Drone Maker Launches $90 Million Manufacturing Project in India
Hyderabad, India – Shield AI, a U.S.-based defense technology company, has commenced construction of a new unmanned aerial systems (UAS) production facility in India. The project, a $90 million joint venture with JSW Group, aims to establish local manufacturing of the V-BAT drone for the Indian defense sector.
The facility, located in the EMC Maheshwaram aerospace and defense manufacturing zone, will facilitate the full-scale production, assembly, and testing of V-BAT drones. The initiative includes a long-term technology transfer agreement, allowing JSW Group to manufacture the V-BAT system domestically with technical support from Shield AI. This agreement encompasses a global compliance program, technology licensing frameworks, and skilled manpower development.
The V-BAT drone is a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) Group 3 UAS designed for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions. The system is currently deployed by U.S. and allied forces. The new facility is expected to reduce delivery times and increase the availability of the platform for regional customers. The project aligns with India's "Make in India" policy, aiming to strengthen domestic defense production and drive local supply-chain development.
BNN's Perspective: This partnership represents a significant step in strengthening defense ties between the U.S. and India. The transfer of technology and local manufacturing capabilities could enhance India's defense capabilities while also providing economic benefits. The project's success will depend on effective technology transfer and the ability to meet the needs of the Indian defense sector.
