Turkey Deploys Indigenous Kamikaze Drone for Security Forces
Turkish defense firm STM Defense Technologies Engineering has delivered its domestically developed Alpagu loitering munition system to Turkish security forces. The Alpagu, a fixed-wing kamikaze drone, is designed to enhance national defense capabilities with its lightweight, precision-guided strike system.
STM's General Director emphasized the drone's role in strengthening operational effectiveness. The Alpagu was first exported in 2023, and the current delivery supports domestic use, reinforcing STM's commitment to providing cost-effective loitering munition options.
The Alpagu, named after a historic Turkish term for a brave warrior, is optimized for short-range precision strikes. Weighing under two kilograms and measuring less than one meter in length, the system can be deployed and operated by a single soldier. It features in-house developed airframe and guidance systems, emphasizing reduced radar signature, modularity, and ease of use.
The drone integrates electro-optical and infrared imaging payloads, enabling day and night operations across a range of up to 8 kilometers. Its internal algorithms support autonomous flight navigation while maintaining human supervision for target selection and strike control.
The Alpagu is designed for tactical missions, including counterterrorism, cross-border engagement, and urban conflict scenarios. It has a flight endurance of 15 minutes, a cruise speed of 20 meters per second, and operates at altitudes between 80 and 200 meters. Its 270-gram warhead provides terminal effect against fixed and mobile targets. The drone includes features such as ammunition safety mechanisms, mission-change capability, and a self-destruct function. The launch and control systems are designed for field conditions. The system's communication architecture allows for the simultaneous management of multiple Alpagu platforms from a single station.
STM highlights that the Alpagu is one of only two loitering munition systems globally that combine this level of operational autonomy and precision targeting in the sub-2kg category. The company views this delivery as part of a growing trend towards lightweight, modular UAV solutions with both surveillance and strike capabilities.
BNN's Perspective:
The deployment of the Alpagu reflects Turkey's growing focus on indigenous defense capabilities. While the technology offers potential advantages in tactical scenarios, the proliferation of such systems raises concerns about the evolving nature of modern warfare and the potential for increased conflict. A balanced approach, emphasizing responsible use and international oversight, is crucial as these technologies become more widespread.
