Trump to Receive Luxury Jet from Qatar, Potentially for Air Force One Use

President Donald Trump is reportedly set to receive a luxury Boeing 747-8 jumbo jet as a gift from Qatar's ruling family, potentially to be used as a new version of Air Force One. This announcement is expected during Trump's upcoming trip to the Middle East, which includes stops in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

According to ABC News, the plan is for Trump to utilize the aircraft as Air Force One until shortly before he leaves office in January 2029, at which point ownership will transfer to the foundation overseeing his future presidential library. The move has raised ethical questions, particularly regarding the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution, which prohibits government officials from accepting gifts from foreign entities without congressional consent.

Experts like Kathleen Clark of Washington University School of Law have criticized the move, citing concerns about potential conflicts of interest and the exploitation of government power for personal gain. Administration officials, anticipating scrutiny, have prepared an analysis arguing the gift is legal.

The existing Air Force One fleet, modified Boeing 747s, are over 30 years old. While Boeing has a contract to produce updated versions, delivery has been delayed. The Qatari jet, if converted, would have more limited capabilities than the current Air Force One aircraft, including lacking air-to-air refueling capabilities.

This potential gift comes as Trump's family business, the Trump Organization, has significant interests in the Middle East, including a new deal to build a luxury golf resort in Qatar. While the Trump Organization has an ethics agreement in place, it allows deals with private companies abroad, a departure from his first term.
