Trump Endorses Burt Jones for Georgia Governor

President Donald Trump has endorsed Georgia Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones in his bid for the state's governorship. Trump announced his support on Monday via Truth Social, highlighting Jones's popularity and describing Georgia as a "very special place."

Trump's endorsement lauded Jones's commitment to several key policy areas. These include economic growth, tax cuts, and deregulation. Trump also emphasized Jones's dedication to promoting American manufacturing, energy independence, border security, military and veterans support, law and order, election integrity, and the Second Amendment.

Jones, who launched his campaign last month, is the second Republican to enter the race. A campaign ad for Jones emphasized his conservative leadership and collaboration with Trump. Jones's campaign platform focuses on eliminating the state income tax, combating the fentanyl crisis, and preventing transgender women from participating in women's sports.

Jones served in the Georgia Senate from 2013 to 2023. His candidacy is currently under scrutiny. In April 2024, a prosecutor was appointed to investigate whether Jones violated the law regarding his involvement in an alleged effort to overturn the state's 2020 general election results. Jones was one of the so-called alternate electors who signed documents claiming Trump won the election, despite losing to Joe Biden. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis was initially leading the investigation but was disqualified due to a conflict of interest.

In the governor's race, Jones will face state Attorney General Chris Carr in the primary. Carr has filed a lawsuit against Jones, alleging campaign finance violations. A state ethics commission previously declined to investigate the legality of a $10 million loan Jones made to a campaign committee. Jones has denied any wrongdoing.
