Troy Girls Basketball Dominates Beckman, Signaling a Resurgence
The Troy High School girls' basketball team delivered a resounding performance Monday night, defeating Beckman High School 65-42 in the Marina tournament at Huntington Beach High. This victory marks a significant step forward for the Warriors under the guidance of returning coach Kevin Kiernan.
The game showcased Troy's defensive prowess, with their 2-2-1 3/4 court trap and man defense forcing nearly 20 turnovers, including eight in a crucial second quarter. Freshman Rilynn Robinson led the scoring with a career-high 20 points, demonstrating Kiernan's confidence in her abilities. Freshman Aarna Nagakar and junior Riley Almendarez contributed 10 points each off the bench, further highlighting the team's depth.
Troy's dominant second quarter, where they outscored Beckman 22-5, was particularly impressive, especially considering the loss of guard Aoki Perry to an ankle injury early in the period. Despite the setback, the Warriors maintained their momentum, fueled by Robinson's sharp shooting and the team's overall defensive intensity.
Beckman, ranked No. 8 in the recent Orange County rankings, advanced to the Surf City Division final based on point differential in pool play. Nastash Jafari led Beckman with 14 points.
Coach Kiernan expressed his satisfaction with the victory, emphasizing the significance of defeating a strong opponent. He noted the team's progress and the excitement surrounding the return of "Warrior basketball."
In other tournament action, Fairmont Prep and JSerra secured spots in the finals of the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic. Fairmont Prep, led by Adyra Rajan's impressive 37 points, will face JSerra, who defeated Redondo.
