Tropical Storm Fernand Gains Strength in Atlantic, Expected to Dissipate at Sea

Tropical Storm Fernand, the sixth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, is currently gaining strength in the Atlantic Ocean. According to the National Hurricane Center's (NHC) 11 p.m. EDT advisory, the storm has maximum sustained winds of 50 mph and is moving north-northeast at 13 mph. Tropical storm-force winds extend outward about 60 miles from the storm's center.

Fernand is located approximately 320 miles east of Bermuda. The NHC forecasts that the storm will continue to move across the open waters of the subtropical central Atlantic, well east and northeast of Bermuda. No coastal watches or warnings are in effect, and the storm is expected to remain at sea throughout its lifespan.

Forecasters anticipate that Fernand will strengthen over the next 12 to 24 hours due to warm water conditions. However, the storm is projected to weaken starting late Monday or Tuesday as it moves over a sea surface with decreasing temperatures. The NHC expects Fernand to become post-tropical by Wednesday.

The formation of Fernand follows the earlier Hurricane Eric, which affected areas along the East Coast last week without making landfall. Eric was the season's first hurricane and briefly reached Category 4 status with maximum sustained winds of up to 150 mph.

Colorado State University climatologists predicted in April that the current storm season would produce 17 named storms, including nine hurricanes. They also predicted that four hurricanes would reach "major" Category 3 storm status, with maximum sustained winds of at least 111 mph. The Atlantic storm season runs from June 1 to November 30. Last year saw 18 named storms, including 11 hurricanes, with five becoming major hurricanes.

BNN's Perspective: While the current forecast suggests Fernand will not impact land, the ongoing hurricane season highlights the importance of preparedness. The predictions for this year's activity underscore the need for vigilance and the importance of staying informed about potential weather threats. It is crucial to follow updates from official sources like the NHC and heed any warnings issued for your area.
