Transportation Secretary Duffy Announces Major Overhaul of US Air Traffic Control System
**Washington, D.C.** - Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has unveiled a comprehensive plan to modernize the United States' aging air traffic control system. This ambitious project aims to address long-standing inefficiencies, reduce flight delays, and enhance overall safety in the national airspace. The overhaul, slated for full implementation by 2028, will replace outdated technology with cutting-edge systems.
The initiative comes after warnings from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) about the urgent need to modernize the existing infrastructure. * **Surveillance:** Replacing existing surveillance systems, reducing the number of configurations from 12 to two, and replacing over 600 radars.
* **Traffic Flow Management:** Re-architecting the slow Traffic Flow Management System by 2028.
* **New Facilities:** Building six new state-of-the-art air traffic control centers, the first since the 1960s, between 2025 and 2028.
* **Weather Systems:** Upgrading weather observation systems in Alaska.
* **New York Area Improvements:** Addressing issues in the New York area, including a pilot program for "best equipped, best served" aircraft at JFK and LGA airports.
The plan also includes a new requirement for aircraft flying into JFK and LGA between 3-8 PM starting in December 2025 to be equipped with Multiple Airport Route Separation.
