Fatih Akin Fears Return to Turkey Amid Crackdown on Dissent

Acclaimed Turkish-German film director Fatih Akin has voiced his fears of potential arrest if he returns to Turkey, citing the imprisonment of his manager, Ayse Barim. Barim, accused of attempting to overthrow the government in relation to the 2013 Gezi Park protests, is described by Akin as "totally apolitical and innocent."

Akin, known for his films like "Head-On" and "In the Fade," expressed his concern in an interview with AFP, stating he doesn't want to "take the risk" of being arrested. He believes the current Turkish government, led by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is operating with "mobster" tactics, prioritizing power over values. He highlighted the case against Barim, who denies the charges and claims she only attended the protests to accompany her clients, some of Turkey's most famous stars.

The Gezi Park protests, initially sparked by a small demonstration to save trees, escalated into nationwide anti-government demonstrations. Akin also pointed out that Barim's alleged connection to jailed liberal philanthropist Osman Kavala, who financed part of Akin's film "The Cut," is being used against her.

Akin's comments come amidst a broader crackdown on dissent in Turkey, with nearly 2,000 people arrested since the arrest of Istanbul's opposition mayor Ekrem Imamoglu in March. Imamoglu, a potential rival to Erdogan, was arrested on corruption charges, which the opposition and rights groups say is politically motivated.

Akin, a Golden Globe and Golden Bear winner, fears Turkish prosecutors may try to implicate him in the alleged plot. He emphasized that the authorities are targeting journalists, lawyers, celebrities, and elected officials, particularly since the 2016 coup attempt.

BNN's Perspective: While the situation in Turkey is undeniably concerning, with a clear pattern of targeting dissent, it's crucial to acknowledge the complexities of the political landscape. The Gezi Park protests were a significant event, and the government's response has been heavy-handed. However, it's also important to avoid generalizations and consider all perspectives when analyzing such sensitive political situations.
