Thunder Survive Mavericks' Late Surge, Remain Undefeated
Oklahoma City Thunder maintained their perfect record with a hard-fought 101-94 victory against the Dallas Mavericks on Monday. The Thunder built a commanding 22-point lead in the fourth quarter, only to see the Mavericks mount a furious comeback that nearly erased the deficit.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was pivotal for the Thunder, scoring 13 of his 23 points in the third quarter. Despite a strong start, Oklahoma City struggled offensively in the final period, shooting just 5 of 21 from the field. Dallas capitalized on the Thunder's offensive woes, launching a 15-0 run to narrow the gap to four points with just over three minutes remaining. The Mavericks continued to chip away, with D'Angelo Russell's floater bringing them within a single point with under a minute to play.
However, the Thunder managed to regain control in the closing moments. Isaiah Hartenstein's driving layup extended the lead to three points, and Gilgeous-Alexander's successful free throws sealed the win. Gilgeous-Alexander also contributed eight assists.
Chet Holmgren recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Thunder. Ajay Mitchell added 17 points off the bench, and Aaron Wiggins scored 11.
Anthony Davis led the Mavericks with 26 points and 11 rebounds. P.J. Washington contributed 15 points, and Max Christie scored 14. Rookie Cooper Flagg, coming off a strong performance the previous night, struggled, scoring only two points.
BNN's Perspective: This game highlighted the importance of maintaining composure and executing under pressure. While the Thunder showed resilience in holding off the Mavericks' late rally, they'll need to address their offensive inconsistencies to maintain their winning streak against tougher opponents. The Mavericks' comeback, though ultimately unsuccessful, demonstrated their potential and fighting spirit.
