Shaquille Leonard Announces Retirement After Illustrious NFL Career
Indianapolis Colts linebacker Shaquille Leonard, a three-time All-Pro selection, is retiring from the NFL. The announcement was made by the Colts on Wednesday. Leonard, who spent the majority of his six-season career with the Colts, will address fans during halftime of the team's upcoming game against the Las Vegas Raiders this Sunday. He will also participate in the pre-game tradition of striking the team's anvil.
Drafted in the second round in 2018, Leonard quickly made his mark on the league. He was named Defensive Rookie of the Year in his debut season, leading the NFL in tackles and solo tackles. He was also named first-team All-Pro that year. Over the next three seasons, Leonard continued his dominant performance, consistently recording over 120 tackles each season. He earned three Pro Bowl selections and two additional first-team All-Pro honors. In 2021, he led the league in forced fumbles.
Injuries began to plague Leonard's career in 2022, limiting him to only three games. He underwent two back surgeries to address nerve issues, which he described as the "hardest year of my life." Despite returning to action in 2023, Leonard was released by the Colts in November of that season. The team acknowledged his contributions with an in-game tribute at their stadium.
During his time with the Colts, Leonard played in 70 games, accumulating 614 tackles, 32 tackles for loss, 31 passes defensed, 12 interceptions, 17 forced fumbles, and seven fumble recoveries. He finished the 2023 season with the Philadelphia Eagles. Leonard did not play in the NFL last season.
BNN's Perspective: Shaquille Leonard's career is a testament to both exceptional talent and the brutal realities of professional sports. While his career was cut short by injuries, his impact on the field and in the community is undeniable. His early dominance and numerous accolades solidify his place as one of the league's premier linebackers during his prime. His retirement is a loss for the game, but his legacy will endure.
