Veteran Sound Mixer Thomas Causey Dies at 76

Hollywood has lost a seasoned professional. Thomas Dewitt Causey, Jr., a renowned production sound mixer with a career spanning four decades, has passed away at the age of 76. Causey, known for his work on a diverse range of films, including the iconic *Dick Tracy* and the critically acclaimed *Broadcast News*, died on Sunday after a prolonged illness. His daughter-in-law, Crystal Causey, confirmed his passing.

Causey's career saw him contribute to over 85 films, leaving a significant mark on the industry. His talent earned him an Academy Award nomination for his work on Warren Beatty's *Dick Tracy* in 1990. His filmography also boasts notable titles such as *Gardens of Stone*, *The Fisher King*, *Bulworth*, and *Defending Your Life*.

A particularly fruitful collaboration was his partnership with horror maestro John Carpenter. Causey served as the sound mixer on eleven of Carpenter's films, including all three installments of the *Halloween* franchise, as well as *Escape from New York*, *Escape from L.A.*, *The Thing*, *Big Trouble in Little China*, *Christine*, *Starman*, *Prince of Darkness*, and *Village of the Damned*.

Causey's passion for sound mixing began in his youth. While working as a driver for a British production filming in Louisiana, he was inspired to pursue the craft. He secured a $5,000 loan to purchase his initial sound equipment, which he used to work on local film projects and record live albums for jazz musicians. In 1977, he relocated to Los Angeles with his wife, driven by a court ruling that opened up union membership to non-union sound mixers who had worked a certain number of days on local sets.

Causey is survived by his wife, Christina Causey, his son, Jesse Causey, and his brother, Matthew Causey.
