PUBG Spin-Off, Blindspot, to Shut Down After Short Run
Krafton's early-access title, PUBG: Blindspot, a spin-off of the popular PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds franchise, is set to close its doors on March 30th, just shy of its two-month anniversary. The announcement was made by ARC Team's Sequoia Yang, citing the inability to sustainably provide the intended level of experience through Early Access. Yang expressed gratitude to the players for their support and indicated that the team would regroup, with hopes of returning with new experiences in the future.
Blindspot, a free-to-play 5v5 top-down tactical shooter focused on teamwork, struggled to gain a substantial player base. Despite generally favorable reviews on Steam, many users noted the game's reliance on a larger player pool to facilitate matches.
The closure of Blindspot comes amidst a competitive landscape for live-service shooters. The market is currently dominated by titles such as Helldivers 2 and Arc Raiders. Even the highly anticipated Marathon has seen sales that, while not a failure, fell short of expectations, particularly given the investment from Sony and Bungie.
The ARC Team, the developers of Blindspot, is not owned by Krafton, which may allow them to continue to develop other games. Krafton itself is facing legal challenges. The company was recently subject to a legal judgment in favor of the Subnautica 2 producers, who were ousted from their company, Unknown Studios, last summer. The CEO was reinstated, but a new dispute is emerging regarding Subnautica 2's early-access release.
BNN's Perspective: The rapid closure of PUBG: Blindspot highlights the challenges of the competitive gaming market. While the game's concept and reviews were promising, the inability to attract a sufficient player base underscores the importance of a strong launch and sustained engagement in the free-to-play model. The legal issues facing Krafton add another layer of complexity to the company's current situation.
