Iran Protests: Death Toll Surpasses 2,500, Activists Say

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - The death toll from ongoing protests in Iran has surged past 2,500, according to activists. The U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency reported the figure, which includes at least 2,571 fatalities, a number that dwarfs previous protest-related deaths in Iran. The protests, which began over two weeks ago, were sparked by economic grievances and quickly evolved to target the theocratic government, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iranian state television acknowledged the deaths, attributing them to gruesome injuries and citing a large number of "martyrs." However, this statement followed reports from activists. Demonstrations have included graffiti and chants calling for Khamenei's death, which could carry a death sentence.

The activist group reported that the deceased included 2,403 protesters, 147 government-affiliated individuals, twelve children, and nine civilians not involved in the protests. Over 18,100 people have been detained.

Communication blackouts have made it difficult to assess the situation. Witnesses described a heavy security presence in Tehran, with burned-out government buildings and smashed ATMs. Concerns about potential U.S. action are also prevalent.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump responded to the news on social media, calling on Iranian citizens to "TAKE OVER YOUR INSTITUTIONS!!!" and announcing the cancellation of meetings with Iranian officials. However, he later stated his administration was awaiting an accurate report on the number of protesters killed. Iranian officials, including Ali Larijani, have warned against U.S. intervention, blaming Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the deaths.

Witnesses reported that security forces were searching for Starlink terminals, and that mortuary services were free, suggesting high fees were charged for the release of bodies. State TV aired pro-government demonstrations, with chants of "Death to America!" and "Death to Israel!"

BNN's Perspective: The situation in Iran is deeply concerning. While the economic grievances driving the protests are understandable, the escalating violence and the government's crackdown are unacceptable. The international community must continue to monitor the situation closely and advocate for human rights while encouraging dialogue and de-escalation.
