Many delivery workers are finding themselves out of work as Korea emerged from lockdown and the craze for ordering in is coming to an end.
According to Statistics Korea Monday, the number of casual part-time workers stood at 4 million in April, down 111,000 from a year earlier and the first decrease since January 2021, when the number fell by 59,000. It also was the largest decrease since January 2019.
The statistics include delivery workers, building janitors, and apartment security guards, but the biggest decline was among food delivery workers, which skyrocketed during lockdown.
In fact, online food purchases fell 13 percent on-year in March to W2.11 trillion, the biggest drop since 2017 (US$1=W1,337).
Food deliveries have been declining since July last year now more people dine out instead of getting their food delivered amid soaring delivery charges.
