Buffy Revival Shelved by Hulu

Fans of the iconic series *Buffy the Vampire Slayer* will be disappointed to learn that the sequel series, *Buffy: New Sunnydale*, is no longer moving forward. Actress Sarah Michelle Gellar, who starred in the original series, announced the news on Instagram, confirming that Hulu has decided not to proceed with the project. The sequel was initially announced in February 2025.

Gellar expressed her gratitude to executive producer Chlo Zhao for the opportunity to revisit the character and acknowledged the enduring impact of Buffy. She concluded her message with a playful nod to the show's themes, promising to be available "if the apocalypse actually comes."

*New Sunnydale* was set to take place 25 years after the original series. The premise involved an older Buffy alongside Ryan Kiera Armstrong as Nova, the next Slayer. The cast included new characters portrayed by actors such as Chase Sui Wonders and Ava Jean. No original cast members were slated to return. Production on the pilot episode, directed by Chlo Zhao, took place last August.

Reports from Deadline suggest the pilot was not without its issues, with a rework considered before the ultimate decision to cancel the project. The cancellation comes amidst other developments in the sci-fi and fantasy television landscape, including a new *X-Files* series from Ryan Coogler and a potential continuation of *Firefly*, both also slated for Hulu.

While *New Sunnydale* is off the table, Hulu is reportedly still interested in the *Buffy* IP and is exploring potential future iterations of the franchise.

BNN's Perspective:

The cancellation of *New Sunnydale* is a setback for fans eager to revisit the Buffyverse. While the pilot's reported issues may have contributed to the decision, Hulu's continued interest in the IP suggests that the franchise's potential remains. It's a delicate balance for studios to strike, honoring the legacy of beloved shows while also bringing fresh perspectives. Hopefully, any future attempts will find the right formula to satisfy both longtime fans and new audiences.
