Tennyson Street Bar Owner Secures Real Estate in $1.6M Deal
Denver, CO – Eli Cox, owner of the popular Tennyson Street bar My Boy Tony, has expanded his real estate holdings with the recent purchase of the building housing his establishment. Cox, along with business partner Mark Hansen, acquired the property at 4280 Tennyson St. for $1.6 million last week. The 1,620-square-foot building includes an outdoor patio and an upstairs apartment.
The purchase, which translates to $957 per square foot, was financed with a $1.2 million, 25-year loan from Alpine Bank. Cox confirmed that no outside investors were involved in the transaction. The bar's third partner, John Strieby, was not part of the real estate deal.
The seller, Nicole Sullivan, previously operated BookBar, a bookstore and bar, in the space for approximately a decade before closing in early 2023. Sullivan originally purchased the building in September 2012 for $685,000. The building, originally a Victorian-style home built in 1896, had a retail storefront added in 1948. Sullivan, who is preparing to move out of state, chose to sell to Cox and Hansen, who had expressed interest in purchasing the property.
Cox's investment in the Tennyson Street area extends beyond My Boy Tony. He founded the clothing store Berkeley Supply in 2012 and, along with partners, purchased the liquor store at 4340 Tennyson St. and its real estate in the fall of 2022. Cox expressed his commitment to preserving the character of Tennyson Street, stating his desire to keep it "the way it's always been."
BNN's Perspective: This transaction highlights the ongoing evolution of local business ownership and the importance of community ties. While the purchase price reflects the current real estate market, the commitment of local business owners like Cox to invest in their properties and the surrounding neighborhood is a positive sign for the area's future.
