Ten Face Trial in Paris Over Cyberbullying of French First Lady

PARIS – A trial is set to begin Monday in Paris for ten individuals accused of cyberbullying Brigitte Macron, the wife of French President Emmanuel Macron. The defendants, comprised of eight men and two women, are facing charges related to the dissemination of malicious online comments targeting the First Lady.

Prosecutors allege the accused spread numerous defamatory statements concerning Brigitte Macron's gender and sexuality. These comments also reportedly referenced the age difference between her and her husband, implying pedophilia. The defendants range in age from 41 to 60. Some are known to be active on social media, with their posts garnering significant views.

Among those on trial are a woman who identifies as a medium and an advertising executive, whose X account has since been suspended. An elected official, a teacher, and a computer scientist are also among the accused.

The case stems from conspiracy theories that have circulated for years, falsely claiming Brigitte Macron was born a man named Jean-Michel Trogneux, who is actually her brother.

This trial follows a defamation suit filed by the Macrons in July in a Delaware court. Their lawyer stated they will seek substantial damages from U.S. conservative influencer Candace Owens if she continues to promote the claims. Owens, a political commentator, has a large online following.

In a separate legal matter, Brigitte and Jean-Michel Trogneux previously won a defamation suit against two women in September 2024. However, a Paris appeals court overturned the ruling in July. The Macrons have since appealed that decision to France's highest court.

The Macrons, married since 2007, met when Emmanuel Macron was a student and Brigitte, 24 years his senior, was a teacher.

BNN's Perspective: This case highlights the serious consequences of online harassment and the spread of misinformation. While freedom of speech is paramount, the deliberate dissemination of false and malicious claims, especially when targeting individuals, should not be tolerated. The legal actions taken by the Macrons underscore the importance of holding individuals accountable for their online behavior and protecting the reputations of public figures.
