Spuds softball team stays alive in Section 8-4A playoffs

ELK RIVER, Minn. The Moorhead softball team stayed alive in the Section 8-4A playoffs with wins in two elimination games on Tuesday.
The Spuds defeated St. Cloud 12-2 in five innings in the elimination bracket quarterfinals, then downed Elk River 8-5 in the semifinals.
The No. 5 seed Spuds play No. 2 Brainerd at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, June 1, at St. Michael-Albertville. STMA reached the championship with a 6-4 win over Brainerd on Tuesday.
Against Elk River, Moorhead built a six-run lead in the sixth inning and held off the Elks, who scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
The Spuds' Taylor Brueske was 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBI, and Avery Babolian and Alexa Krueger both were 2 for 3 with an RBI. Taylor Kressin and Rylie Spitzner both had hits and RBI.

Kellsey Klundt got the win working the final five innings in relief. She allowed three unearned runs on six hits.
Against St. Cloud, the Spuds led 3-1 after 2-1/2 innings and all but put the game away with a six-run third inning.
Spitzner was 2 for 3 with a double and three runs batted in and Kressin was 2 for 4 with two RBI. Madden Bogenreif was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI and Avery Babolian and Addie Salvevold both had hits and RBI. Payton Babolian was 2 for 3.
Avery Babolian got the win, allowing one earned run on four hits in four innings and she struck out five. Klundt allowed a hit and struck out two in the fifth.
