Spotify Sees Strong Growth in Q4, Shares Surge

Spotify, the leading music streaming service, reported robust financial results for its fourth quarter, leading to a significant jump in its share price. The company saw substantial growth in both premium subscribers and overall monthly active users (MAUs), signaling continued dominance in the competitive streaming market.

Spotify added 9 million premium subscribers in the quarter, bringing the total to 290 million, a 10% increase year-over-year. Total MAUs surged by a record 38 million, reaching 751 million, an 11% increase. The ad-supported MAU segment also experienced growth, increasing by 12% to 476 million.

The company's financial performance reflected this user growth. Premium revenue grew by 8% to $4.01 billion, while ad-supported revenue decreased by 4% to $518 million. Spotify reported a net income of $1.17 billion, a significant increase from $899 million in the previous year. Earnings per share (EPS) reached $4.43, exceeding analyst expectations. Total revenue for the quarter was $4.53 billion, up 7% year-over-year. Operating income also improved, reaching $701 million.

Looking ahead, Spotify anticipates continued growth in the first quarter of fiscal 2026. The company projects to add 3 million premium subscribers, reaching a total of 293 million, and 8 million MAUs, totaling 759 million. Revenue is expected to be $4.5 billion, with an operating income of $660 million.

Spotify has also been actively expanding its offerings. In January, the company announced a price increase for its premium subscriptions in the U.S. and launched video podcasts. Additionally, a music video beta is rolling out to premium users in the U.S. and Canada. Spotify also highlighted its significant contributions to the music industry, paying out over $11 billion in 2025, with independent artists and labels receiving a substantial portion of royalties.

BNN's Perspective: Spotify's strong performance demonstrates its ability to navigate the evolving streaming landscape. While price increases may raise concerns among some users, the company's continued growth in both subscribers and revenue suggests a strong value proposition. The expansion into video podcasts and music videos could further solidify Spotify's position as a comprehensive entertainment platform.
