Southwest Airlines Ends Customer of Size Policy, Introducing New Fees
Southwest Airlines, known for its customer-centric approach, is changing its policy regarding plus-size passengers. The airline is ending its Customer of Size policy, which previously allowed passengers needing extra space to purchase an additional seat and receive a refund. This shift, effective January 27, 2026, requires passengers who cannot comfortably fit within a single seat's armrests to purchase a second seat. Refunds will only be considered if the flight isn't sold out, both seats are in the same fare class, and the refund request is made within 90 days of the journey.
This policy change coincides with two other significant shifts. Southwest will also transition from its open-seating model to assigned seating on the same date. Furthermore, the airline ended its "Bags Fly Free" policy in May 2025, introducing baggage fees.
The new policy aligns Southwest with other major airlines, including American Airlines, United Airlines, Spirit Airlines, and Frontier Airlines, which already require passengers needing extra space to purchase an additional seat.
Southwest has stated that the policy update is part of preparations for assigned seating. The airline is advising customers who previously utilized the extra-seat policy to purchase the additional seat during booking.
Travel industry professionals have expressed concerns about the impact of the policy change. Some believe it will negatively affect the flying experience for all passengers.
BNN's Perspective:
While the move to align with industry standards might be seen as a necessary business decision, it's important to consider the potential impact on inclusivity and customer loyalty. Southwest has long cultivated a reputation for prioritizing customer experience, and this change could erode that image. The airline should carefully monitor customer feedback and consider ways to mitigate any negative effects, ensuring a fair and comfortable travel experience for all passengers.
