Colorado SNAP Recipients to Receive Produce Bonus
Denver, CO – Approximately 580,000 Coloradans who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits are eligible for a new produce bonus this summer. The program, designed to encourage healthy eating, provides a dollar-for-dollar match on fruits and vegetables purchased at participating retailers.
The Colorado Department of Human Services (CDHS), in partnership with Nourish Colorado, launched a pilot program last summer. The electronic Healthy Incentive Program allows SNAP users to receive up to $60 per month in bonus funds. These funds are added to their electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards when they purchase eligible fruits and vegetables. The bonus funds can then be used on any SNAP-eligible items at any authorized retailer.
The program has seen high success, with over 99% of bonus benefits successfully redeemed since its inception. Participating retailers include brick-and-mortar stores, farm stands, and markets.
Officials say the program helps families stretch their food budgets and access nutritious foods. Retailers have also reported positive feedback, with many customers enthusiastic about the initiative.
This program aligns with a broader trend of states seeking to promote healthier eating habits among SNAP recipients. Several states, including Nebraska, Iowa, and Indiana, have recently received federal approval to limit SNAP purchases of unhealthy items like soda and candy.
BNN's Perspective:
This program appears to be a well-intentioned effort to address food insecurity and promote healthy eating habits. While the program's success is encouraging, it's important to consider the potential for unintended consequences. Ensuring equitable access to healthy food options across all communities and monitoring the program's long-term impact on both SNAP recipients and participating retailers will be crucial.
