New Skybridge to Connect Amway Stadium to Parking Garage

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Construction is set to begin this year on a new skybridge designed to connect visitors of the upcoming Amway Stadium to a nearby parking garage. The project, currently in the construction design phase, is being spearheaded by Grand Action 2.0, the private economic development group overseeing the new soccer stadium's construction.

The skybridge will span the intersection of Lake Michigan Drive and Winter Avenue, linking Grand Valley State University's parking garage to the David D. Hunting YMCA and the new stadium. This pedestrian walkway aims to provide a safe passage for individuals traveling between the YMCA and the university's parking facilities, given the significant traffic volume on the roadways. Stadium visitors utilizing the university's parking garage will also benefit from the new bridge.

The cost of the skybridge is included within the overall stadium project, which is estimated to cost $175 million. The Grand Rapids Planning Commission approved the site plan for the skybridge in March 2025. The walkway is planned to be approximately 167 feet long, with a 30-foot clearance over the roadway.

The new Amway Stadium, set to open in spring 2027, will be home to Athletic Club Grand Rapids, the MLS Next Pro soccer team. The stadium, with a capacity of 8,500 seats, will host professional soccer matches, with the team playing 28 games per season. The venue is also intended to host a variety of other events, including youth and amateur sporting events, as well as cultural activities.

BNN's Perspective: This skybridge project appears to be a sensible addition to the new stadium development. It addresses a practical need for pedestrian safety and accessibility, which should enhance the overall experience for stadium visitors and the broader community. While the cost is bundled into the larger stadium project, the benefits of improved connectivity and safety seem to justify the investment.
