Broadway Hit "Six" to Hit Cinemas This Summer

Focus Features is set to release a filmed version of the hit Broadway musical "Six" in domestic cinemas on August 14th. The musical reimagines the six wives of King Henry VIII as pop icons, presented in a concert-style format.

The filmed performance was recorded at the Vaudeville Theatre in London, featuring the original West End cast. The Queens are portrayed by Jarnia Richard-Noel as Catherine of Aragon, Millie O'Connell as Anne Boleyn, Natalie Paris as Jane Seymour, Alexia McIntosh as Anna of Cleves, Aimie Atkinson as Katherine Howard, and Maiya Quansah-Breed as Catherine Parr. The musical was written by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss.

The film adaptation of "Six" has already been released in the United Kingdom and Australia, generating over $8.5 million in combined box office revenue. The film was directed by Liz Clare, with Moss and Jamie Armitage directing the stage production. The film was produced by Kenny Wax, Wendy & Andy Barnes, George Stiles and Dione Orrom.

"Six" premiered on the West End in 2019 and made its Broadway debut in 2021 following the pandemic. By the time of the film's release, the Tony-winning Broadway production will have surpassed 2,000 performances. The musical has since expanded globally, with productions in 16 countries. "Six" joins a growing list of Broadway productions that have been adapted for film, including "Merrily We Roll Along," "Hamilton," "Come From Away," and "Waitress."

BNN's Perspective: The trend of bringing live theater to the big screen is a welcome development. It provides broader access to high-quality productions and preserves these performances for future audiences. While the success of "Six" in the UK and Australia is promising, the film's reception in the US will be a key indicator of the continued viability of this model.
