Labor Day 2025: What's Open and Closed

As the summer season winds down, millions of Americans will celebrate Labor Day on September 1st, 2025. While many will enjoy a day off, those needing to run errands or make purchases will find a mixed bag of availability.

Most major retailers and grocery chains will remain open, though some may operate with modified hours. Walmart stores are expected to be open during their regular business hours. Similarly, Trader Joe's and Starbucks locations will be open, with Starbucks hours potentially varying. Several grocery stores, including Kroger, Stop & Shop, Wegmans, and Whole Foods, will also welcome customers.

However, some services will be unavailable. Major banks, including Bank of America, Citi, JPMorgan Chase, and Wells Fargo, will be closed. The U.S. Postal Service will also be closed, meaning no mail delivery on Labor Day. The stock market will be closed as well, with trading resuming on Tuesday. Costco will be closed.

For those looking for a quick bite, many fast-food chains and restaurants will be open, though it's advisable to check local hours. The list includes Applebee's, Burger King, Dunkin', IHOP, McDonald's, Olive Garden, Taco Bell, and Wendy's, among others.

Other stores open on Labor Day include Dollar General, Home Depot, Kohl's, Macy's, Marshalls, Petco, Sam's Club (closing early), TJ Maxx, and Walgreens.

Shipping services will also be affected. FedEx will not be delivering packages, but office outlets will be open with modified hours, as will its Custom Critical service. UPS will not offer pickup or delivery service, and some locations will be closed.

BNN's Perspective:

Labor Day is a time to celebrate the contributions of American workers, and it's understandable that many businesses adjust their operations to allow employees to enjoy the holiday. The availability of essential services like grocery stores and pharmacies ensures that people can still meet their needs, while the closures of banks and the postal service provide a well-deserved break for those employees.
