SD Unified Expands Free Transitional Kindergarten Program
San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) is significantly expanding its free transitional kindergarten (TK) program for the upcoming school year. The district announced the addition of nine new classrooms, increasing enrollment capacity by 180 seats. This expansion brings the total number of available TK seats to 5,200.
The TK program is designed for children who will be four years old on or before September 1, 2026. Enrollment is currently open and families can apply online at SanDiegoUnified.org/TK. The deadline for applications is March 22.
According to district officials, TK serves as a bridge between preschool and kindergarten, offering a full-day, play-based learning environment. The program follows the elementary school calendar and bell schedule. It is offered at all elementary and K-8 schools within the district, with the exception of Virtual Academy and Mt. Everest. If a school's TK seats are filled, students will be placed at a nearby school with available space. Some schools may have waiting lists.
The curriculum is based on state guidelines and emphasizes play-based learning to build a strong academic and social-emotional foundation. Each TK classroom has two teachers. District leaders emphasize the program's role in fostering confidence, curiosity, and readiness for kindergarten and beyond. Families are encouraged to apply early for the best chance of securing a seat in their neighborhood school. Support is available for families needing assistance, including in-person help at neighborhood schools, enrollment kiosks, and the Neighborhood Schools and Enrollment Options office.
BNN's Perspective:
The expansion of free transitional kindergarten is a positive step towards providing early childhood education opportunities. While the program's focus on play-based learning and social-emotional development is commendable, it's crucial to ensure that the curriculum also adequately prepares children for the academic demands of kindergarten. The district should also closely monitor the program's impact on student outcomes and make adjustments as needed to maximize its effectiveness.
