Salesforce Scoops Up Informatica for $8 Billion to Supercharge AI
Salesforce is making a major move to bolster its artificial intelligence capabilities, announcing the acquisition of data-management software firm Informatica for a whopping $8 billion. The deal, approved by both companies' boards, will see Salesforce acquire all outstanding shares of Informatica not already owned, with shareholders receiving $25 per share in cash. The transaction is anticipated to close in fiscal year 2027.
This acquisition is a strategic play to enhance Salesforce's data foundation, deemed crucial for deploying "powerful and responsible agentic AI." The combined power of Informatica's data catalog, integration, governance, quality, privacy, metadata management, and master data management services with the Salesforce platform aims to create a unified architecture for AI agents. This will enable these agents to operate safely, responsibly, and at scale across various industries.
Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff emphasized the goal of creating the "most complete, agent-ready data platform in the industry," promising smarter, safer, and more scalable outcomes for businesses. This move also strengthens Salesforce's position in the massive $150 billion-plus enterprise data market.
This acquisition follows Salesforce's established pattern of strategic acquisitions, including MuleSoft in 2018 and Slack Technologies Inc. in 2021. Salesforce's chief operating and financial officer, Robin Washington, highlighted the company's "methodical, patient, and decisive" acquisition strategy, focusing on transformative assets like Informatica to maximize customer success. The company plans to rapidly integrate Informatica's capabilities, particularly in sectors like the public sector, life sciences, healthcare, and financial services.
