Derek Carr Retires: Saints QB Calls it Quits After Shoulder Injury

New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr is hanging up his cleats after 11 seasons in the NFL, the team announced Saturday. The decision comes due to a right shoulder injury, specifically a labral tear and degenerative rotator cuff damage, which has plagued the 34-year-old signal-caller.

Carr had been battling shoulder discomfort since a left hand injury sustained during a December 8th game against the New York Giants. After consulting with medical professionals and reflecting with his family, Carr made the difficult decision to retire.

The Saints confirmed that surgery was an option, potentially sidelining Carr for the entire 2025 season. However, there was no guarantee he would regain his previous level of performance. Carr expressed his gratitude to teammates, coaches, management, and especially the fans, for their unwavering support throughout his career.

Carr joined the Saints in 2023 after a successful run with the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders (2014-2022). During his two seasons in New Orleans, he started 27 games, compiling a 14-13 record. He was limited to 10 games in 2024 due to injuries.

Throughout his career, the four-time Pro Bowl selection amassed impressive stats, throwing for 41,245 yards and 257 touchdowns with 112 interceptions. The Saints are now looking to the future, having drafted quarterback Tyler Shough in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft. They also have Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener on the roster.

BNN's Perspective: While Carr's retirement is undoubtedly disappointing for Saints fans, it's a pragmatic decision considering the severity of his shoulder injury and the potential impact on his future performance. The Saints now have a chance to build for the future with their young quarterback prospects, but Carr's experience and leadership will be missed.
