Rust Armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed Released from Prison After Manslaughter Conviction

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the armorer convicted in the fatal "Rust" movie set shooting, has been released from prison. The 27-year-old was freed on Friday, May 23, after serving time for involuntary manslaughter in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. The tragic incident occurred in October 2021 when a prop revolver, handled by Gutierrez-Reed, was fired by actor Alec Baldwin, resulting in Hutchins' death.

Gutierrez-Reed was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in March 2024, receiving the maximum sentence. She was acquitted of a separate charge of evidence tampering. Following her release, she will be under dual supervision by probation and parole authorities. She will be on parole for a year, until May 23, 2026, and is subject to conditions including electronic monitoring, a curfew, and requirements to either find employment or enroll in school.

The New Mexico Department of Corrections confirmed her release, which took place in Arizona, near the borders of Nevada and California. Gutierrez-Reed was previously held at the Western New Mexico Correctional Facility in Grants, N.M.

The case has drawn significant media attention, with Baldwin's case being dismissed in July 2024. Gutierrez-Reed's defense team maintained her innocence throughout the legal proceedings, stating that the investigation was flawed. She was also convicted in 2023 of bringing a firearm into a New Mexico bar, resulting in 18 months of probation. Gutierrez-Reed has yet to publicly comment on her release.
