Russian Drone Strike on Civilian Bus in Ukraine Kills Nine

A devastating drone attack by Russia on a civilian bus in Ukraine's Sumy region has resulted in the deaths of nine people, according to local authorities. The attack, which occurred on Saturday morning, targeted a minibus evacuating civilians from the town of Bilopillya, a location repeatedly targeted by Russian forces. The strike, carried out with at least one Lancet drone, also injured four other passengers.

The bus was reportedly traveling towards Sumy at approximately 6 am when it was hit. Local officials confirmed that most of the victims were elderly women. The Sumy regional administration condemned the attack as a war crime, emphasizing that the civilian transport posed no threat. Daily bus evacuations have been ongoing since May 5th, when residents of Bilopillya and nearby Vorozhba were urged to relocate due to continued Russian shelling.

The attack occurred just hours after the first direct peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow since 2022 concluded inconclusively in Istanbul. While the talks resulted in an agreement for a large-scale prisoner exchange, a ceasefire was not reached. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has reiterated calls for sanctions against Russia if a ceasefire is not agreed upon.

BNN's Perspective: This attack is a tragic reminder of the ongoing human cost of the conflict. While the breakdown in peace talks is disappointing, the targeting of civilians, regardless of the strategic context, is reprehensible. Both sides must prioritize the safety of civilians and work towards a lasting resolution.
