Kyiv Endures Devastating Overnight Attack, Death Toll Rises to 11

Kyiv was subjected to a large-scale Russian assault overnight into Thursday, resulting in the deaths of at least eleven people and injuries to dozens more. The capital city was shaken by hours of explosions as ballistic and cruise missiles, along with drones, struck targets across the urban landscape. The barrage caused significant damage to residential buildings and civilian infrastructure, prompting many residents to seek refuge in metro stations.

Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko reported that eleven individuals lost their lives in Kyiv and twenty residential buildings sustained damage. Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, stated that fifty-four people were injured, including two children. Damage was documented at thirty locations throughout the city, with a primary focus on residential structures and civilian facilities.

In the wake of what he described as a "night of horror," Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha appealed to Ukraine's international partners for enhanced air defense capabilities. He urged for swift decisions on the delivery of air defense systems and missiles, emphasizing that the death toll could potentially increase as rescue operations continue.

This latest attack follows a recent intensification of Russian strikes on Kyiv. The offensive comes amidst Ukraine's own long-range drone operations targeting Russian military sites and energy infrastructure, which have led to fuel shortages and supply disruptions within Russia. Sybiha firmly rejected any notion that Russia's actions were a response to Ukraine's strikes, asserting that Ukraine was acting in self-defense under international law while Russia remained the aggressor.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko advised residents to remain in shelters due to the ongoing intense enemy attack. Reports from various districts highlighted the severity of the damage. In the Shevchenkivskyi district, a paramedic was among those critically injured, and a hotel along with two five-story residential buildings were damaged. In the Desnianskyi district, rescuers worked to free individuals trapped in a damaged nine-story residential building. Fires were reported on the roof of a sixteen-story building in the Holosiivskyi district and in two private residences in the Sviatoshynskyi district, where debris trapped occupants. The Darnytskyi district saw the collapse of six levels of a nine-story building and damage to another five-story residential structure.

Tkachenko further detailed that a residential building in the Desnianskyi district was partially destroyed, fires erupted near residential buildings in the Pecherskyi district, and a fire started near an administrative building in the Solomianskyi district. Damage was also recorded in the Obolonskyi and Podilskyi districts. The head of the Kyiv Regional Administration, Mykola Kalashnyk, confirmed damage in five regional districts, with three individuals injured in the Bucha district.

BNN's Perspective: This latest large-scale attack on Kyiv underscores the persistent and devastating impact of the conflict on civilian populations. The scale of destruction and the tragic loss of life highlight the urgent need for enhanced defensive measures and a renewed focus on de-escalation, while acknowledging Ukraine's right to defend itself.
